we don't have to worry about any clouds. it will be sunny. highs low 60s for some. mid 60s and if you can get that north wind santa rosa you will be near 70 degrees. here is sal. traffic in san rafael looks good. driving down to 580 no problems on 101. also this morning we are looking at traffic on interstate 880. it's getting more crowded. the weather is clear it's not too bad of a commute when it comes to visibility. this morning chp is trying to determine what lead up to a fatal overnight crash. it happened last night on eastbound 580. investigators say the driver of a volvo sedan was running at top speeds when he raced on to the freeway. he then veered off the roadway and smashed into a tree and died. they have identified him as 57-

year-old ray harrington of oakland. an entire community is mourning the death of a four- year-old boy they hardly knew. jade hernandez is joins us now from patterson with details of a vigil. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we just spoke to a patterson resident that stopped by to tell us several community groups is reaching out to this family. there are ribbons on the door and every tree outside here. at juliani cardenas' family surprised everyone by showing up here. ♪ this little light of mine i'm going to let it shine ♪ >> reporter: hundreds of patterson residents came to show their support. july than any's pre-- juliani's

old ship. it will take most of the morning to move that ship over here. when it arrives in essence this will be history in the making. this dry dock is the first and only one of its kind on the west coast. they offered this contract to al lied. it's to dismanned led two ships. and the first is the sfo tore man. that contract very significant because it makes mayor island the only island to do this. this is also significant for this area because it's providing jobs for those of you who may not be familiar with the history of this island. mayor island was the first navy base. it closed in '96. the general foreman out here who is working on the project he said he worked on mayor island for 37 years. he is in that group.

hard to see. 37 years out here. and then he left and now he's back. he's hoping for 30 more years but again first things first the first ship set to come over here. they will go over the tug boats. that will take from 6:00 to 7:00. it won't be in here until about 11:00. there will be continuous activity this morning. live in mayor island claudine wong. earlier this morning the world's most famous ground hog made his winter weather prediction. >> so an early spring it will be. >> that is the word from punxsutawney phil. he did not see his shadow. according to legend that means an early spring. >> if he would have seen his shadow it would have meant six more weeks of winter. 6:08 this wednesday morning. sal castaneda so far so good

out there this morning? >> i think it is. i will show you traffic pictures that show you traffic is routine. it is getting slower. and you know, quite frankly one of the things i have had to get used to we are on the air at 4:30. as the commute goes on i am used to the number of people that get on the road early. people get out there early. we are trying to help you get to work. one thing i have noticed the commute has been spread out more. so that kind of helps us all out as the traffic is evened out. westbound 237 still looking good. this will not stay there for too long. if you want to get into the valley right now 237, 101, and 280 still looking okay. let's go to steve. sal, gentleman said the same thing to me yesterday. he took his wife to the airport and could not believe how many cars are on the road at 4:00

a.m.. a lot of people we have seen in awho pip you might notice there is no fog. there is a lot of wind. grizzly peak has gusts to 45. mount diablo has gusts to 61. on the peninsula some of the higher elevations picking up the wind. the wind will be a factor today. breezy for some. 26 miles an hour at travis. even at the surface there is pretty breezy gusts. sunny and breezy and mild. a dry pattern for awhile. sunny and warm with 70s for highs. systems continue to try to punch through. but the best they can do is give us a few high clouds and they head to the north. high pressure is not going anywhere. it seems like it wants to stick around for awhile. today no fog. clear skies. gusts 25 to 50 miles an hour. especially some of the higher elevations. east bay hills we've seen gusts 35 to 60. so it will be a sunny day.

gusts 26. sfo east southeast at nine. that is a cool breeze for them. that comes over water. san jose northwest at ten. that could be a mild condition for some. 40s and 50s. there are 20s and 30s for areas that don't have any breeze at all. a lot of 40s and low 50s. good looking system pap lot of energy coming north of the hawaiian islands. where sit -- where is it going? not near us. now some areas that will get to 60s to 70s. santa rosa will go 70s. 65 sausalito. walnut creek 64 but berkeley 68. oakland 70. antioch and livermore low 60s. 66 san jose. santa cruz we will go 66 and santa clara 66.

far. i don't want to jinx it. we are doing okay. highway 4 getting busier. getting busier now. i'm having trouble speaking. besides that the traffic is okay. on 680 it's okay from concord to walnut creek. we are getting some slowing on westbound 24. moving along to the bay bridge. we're having a little bit of slowing here in the left lanes coming up to the pay gates. the fast track lanes as you can see moving along nicely right on through the toll plaza and get into the valley northbound 280 traffic moves well. this commute still has a few minutes before it becomes really crowded. let's go to steve. thank you. skies are clear. the wind has really decided to pick up a little bit court see of a system that dug into the east of us. skies are clear at 30s, 40s, and 50s by a low. any breeze and your upper 40s and low 50s. there is nothing coming in.

welcome back to the morning news. right on time. there is the opening bell in new york this morning. seeing a lot of red over there on the nasdaq because it's american heart associations go red for women. volunteers ringing in the opening bell. it's a national campaign to raise awareness to heart disease among women. it's a big killer and a lot of research and attention toward men and heart disease. this is an annual reminder that it's a big problem for women. so go red for women. i forgot to wear my red dress this morning. >> my apologies.

good morning, to you all out there. thanks for joining us on the ktvu morning news. it's wednesday february 2nd. dave clark has the day off. >> i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. it's a time of mourning in the central valley. two weeks after a four-year-old boy was kidnapped from his grandmothers arms. jade hernandez is live from patterson with details of a tragic discovery. >> reporter: that is right tabitha's mother couldn't hide her anger and hatred toward her exboyfriend. on a facebook page which had been set up to facilitate some of the information. she wanted everyone to pray that jose's body is found so we all know he is burning in hell. rodriguez is the father of that child who is due in march. i want to bring you back out live here in front of patterson

>> as for rodriguez there is a homicide warrant out for his arrest. the sheriffs department indicates they believe that his body will also be recovered in the canal. reporting live from patterson jade hernandez. >> we will continue to bring you reports from patterson all morning long. we you can find continuing coverage on your channel 2 website just click on the cardenas tab. new information is raising new concerns about the safety of pg&e pipelines. kraig debro joins us from south san francisco with the results of recent inspections. good morning . >> reporter: good morning, pam. the pg&e the information submitted yesterday a report that said 21 gas leaks were found near people and buildings. three of them here in san francisco. north of oyster point and down along highway 101 here to grand avenue and then up grand avenue and the direction of san bruno.

now i have just spoken with a gas pipeline safety expert on the phone. he says the leaks are serious but he can only think of one other example where a gas leak actually caused the kind of rupture we saw back on september ninth. the san bruno explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. the report submitted says the utility has fixed the leak. in addition to the 21 that are close to people and buildings. pg&e told the regulatory agency said it found and fixed 38 others. according to richard cooper a gas leak did not cause the san bruno explosion. >> it's extremely rare in my 30 years of experience in investigating these pipelines. >> reporter: i asked him if he was part of the investigation he declined comment. pg&e is racing to sift through a million pipeline records.

the feds asked the utility to do that. jackie spears was told a high ranking pg&e official he said they were not able to find 30% of records for hundreds of miles of gas pipelines that officials later denied to the chronicle that he said that this morning. we are still gathering information on the report and also talking to residents about their reaction to having these leaks so close to downtown san francisco. we are report look live kraig debro. the oakland city council could have a new pot farm policy in a few weeks. the hot topic dominated last nights city council meeting and could have a big impact on the industry for the entire state. last year oakland city leaders approved licensing large scale marijuana farms to bring in tax money. but serious legal questions have now been considering a scaled back version. council woman brooks is

proposing limiting the size of the farms. >> hopefully it's closely aligned with the attorney generals guidelines and won't put the city or cultivators at risk. >> oakland city attorneys still have to sign off on the plan. the public safety committee will review the policy. there was another important item on last nights city council agenda. oakland city leaders are trying to figure out how to save $52 million >> there are projects that people have spent yearns that would be asian to lose. >> governor brown's plan involves collecting money from cities that have not been in use. in oakland there is a lot on the line because redevelopment funds are set aside tomorrow save the oakland a's. officers say they stopped a

car monday night just before 11:00 on loan tree way for a moving violation. a background check of the driver said he was on parole for a robbery. after checking his car, police found a guitar case with an assault rifle and ammunition inside. and a san francisco retailer is due to be arraigned in court today with the connection of the fatal shooting of two rival store workers. 56-year-old -- the father of one of the victims is also criticizing gun laws in the united states and now calling for more regulation. concord police are crediting a hero with helping them track down an armed suspect. that is after a teller was held up at the wells fargo bank on clayton road. police say a man jumped into his car and followed the suspect from the crime scene he then told police where to find

him. the 25-year-old suspect is in jail this morning. decisions have been reached in three parking related issues in san francisco first and effecting the most drivers. tran silt officials set -- transit officials set a time limit. next they approved a $55 penalty for muni workers that park at transit lots without paying a monthly fee. those penalties are expected to generate more than $1 million a year. and a pilot program to give than anies parking permits was approved. it's now 6:38. i want to go back to sal. how is traffic? >> it's getting busier now at the toll plaza. you will look at it and think i missed my window. it's not bad. it might look worse to you than it is. there are no problems on the bridge. no stalls or no crashes on that span. so you still should be in pretty decent shape in case you are considering bart.

breeze. tomorrow will be a cold morning. the weekend looks dry sunny and warmer with highs in the low to mid 70s. i'm standing in front of two systems. one is falling apart on the vine. the second one says i have no place to go expect up and over. the high has built in aloft and that is giving us the north, northeast wind. that chewed up that fog yesterday. gusts 25 to 50 plus. some of the higher elevations at the surface. mount diablo has gusts up to 61 miles an hour. ranch road 458 miles an hour. as that comes down you might be on the side of caldecott. and you will get hit with a pretty good breeze. that makes for a warm pattern for oakland. crystal springs 37 miles an hour. fairfield 26. l.a. honda 25. it's coming out of the east,

good morning, here is a quick look at the top stories we following. you are looking live at the streets of cairo right now where several thousand supporters of mubarak are clashing with protestors. we have been monitoring these live pictures coming out this morning. this massive storm has been causing problems at the airports. anyone catching a flight this morning should go ahead and call a rain. the rain and ice storm is hitting a third of the entire country. new diplomatic cables is released by wikileaks are trying to build nuclear weapons. in just a few hours the

ship from the bays moth ball fleet will be towed. those ships are usually sent to the east coast to be recycled but this one is staying in the bay area. claudine wong joins us now from vallejo to tell us why this is significant. >> reporter: this is an important step. we are standing in front of this dry dock where the ship will be brought here. this will be the first of its kind on the west coast. i want you to take a look over the parking lot where we are standing. see a group of gentlemen standing over there. we want to explain that. this project is significant because of the people and jobs they bring. that group is hoping to be a part of the crew that brings the ship. they want work. they put in applications and one of the men told me if they let them hop on the ship to get to work this morning he wouldn't hesitate. >> i want to try to get in there and tear it down. they might want to bring some more that they say about five

or six years worth of work. it could turn into 30 years of work depends on how it turns out. that would be great for vallejo temperature >> reporter: now this is video that we took within the last half hour of the crew that left to get the tug boats to bring the ship in here. they told us it will take a couple hours to get it from the bay over to this dork doc. work will take months. if we talk about the significance of this project imparticular. in the past any ship that has been taken out of the bay they have been taken to san francisco to be cleaned up. there were towed 5,000 miles through the canal and either over to texas or virginia to be recycled. this is the first west coast recycle ling place they can do that. there are two ships already scheduled to come here again. people hoping there are two with many more to come. live in vallejo claudine wong.

>> in india today 18 young men traveling on the rooftop of an over crowded train were killed when they hit a low overhead bridge. police say the men were on their way to apply for job openings. a dire warning from the australian government this morning as a cyclone moves into queensland. the storm is predicted to with the most dangerous in generations. wind gusts of up to 100 miles an hour are expected. tens of thousands of people are evacuating and those that cannot get out in time are being encouraged to go to evacuation centers. flights disrupted by the eruption in japan will begin today. four people have been injured. volcano is part of a row mote mountain range on a southern island. this is its first major eruption in more than 50 years. a minneapolis woman is

into the valley. well you might want to get on the road now. it seems to be changing there. trying to get into the area. moving along and taking a look at 580 livermore that traffic is busy coming off the pass. and if you are driving on highway 4 it looks okay. the rest of it looks okay. and then marin county nevada to san rafael just after highway 37 may be some crowding but looking good down toward the civic center. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. that is backed up to a ten minute wait. now here is steve. thank you. we have clear skies. it will be sunny today. it's one of those extra hold on the hair spray because the wind is picking up. for some it will be blustery. we are seeing a few locations with calm conditions. many with 15-25 and gusts 45 to 50 and higher elevations. where is that rain? it's out in the pacific. it's not heading in our

direction. the forecast windy at times. sunny cool to mild today. today we will lose a lot of those breeze. they will rebound back up into the 60s to near 70 degrees. the seven-ten day outlook looks good. today no fog. that was wiped out by the wind. gusts 25 to 50 miles an hour. it's an offshore breeze. you know if you have been out here by any length at times it's beautiful. gusts at 61 in mount diablo. grizzly peak 45. fairfield has had gusts to 26. richmond and parts of san francisco gusts at 21. fairfield north at 20. northwest san jose to ten. there is a good breeze kicking up. that means temperatures are held up. 40s to 250 -- 40s to 50s.
